• Cup (goblet) with saucer, Leningrad design
The cup and saucer were produced at the Imperial Porcelain Factory from hard porcelain. The decoration utilizes overglaze décalcomanie and gold accents. The popularity of hunting scene decorations has a centuries-long history. Such amusements were beloved throughout all eras and countries; therefore, it's unsurprising that sketches on this theme can be seen on ancient mosaics and medieval tapestries, on indigenous miniatures, on paintings by world-renowned artists, and even on porcelain. In the 17th–19th centuries, hunting occupied a special place in the life of European nobility; it was accompanied by certain rituals, an art form, and a pleasure. Hunting scenes painted by French artist J.-F. J. Swebach in the early 19th century became a significant phenomenon on vases and services of the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Having gained experience working at Sèvres, he created his own compositions of hunting scenes with mounted figures, distinguished by an individual style characterized by a particular lightness and airiness of depiction. Following the porcelain artists of the 19th century, artist Vladimir Bogdanov of the IPF is inclined to poetize hunting, presenting it not as a source of game but as an art form, a national tradition. The painting is executed in soft tones combined with reeds green and sky-blue water. The ducks disturbed by two hunting dogs "fly" beyond the cup onto the saucer. By making a naturalistic sketch, observing the scene from afar, the artist grasps a new language of expression, finding its lexicon in nature. The dynamic painting, gold accents, and unusual authorial artistic technique unite the images into a single composition, transforming the teacup pair into a unique work of art and an original gift.
